Why study Greek?

Greek is a language with an ancient history. It is also a language that has influenced many other languages in the world. We think Greek is a foreign language written in a foreign alphabet. Yet we speak and write Greek every day without realizing it. Our Alphabet comes from Greek. Our Vocabulary is filled with Greek. Much can be said of the broad understanding of language and culture which can be gained through studying Greek.
It is also very useful if you are or want to become a translator, interpreter, guide, linguist, social anthropologist, ethnologist and for anyone else who just like to learn a new language or are in contact with Greeks or Greek culture. Studying Greek with us at Anixi will not only teach you the language, you will also learn about Greek culture, its' history and society.

A brief history lesson about the Greek language

Greek has been spoken in the Balkan Peninsula since the 2nd millennium BC. The earliest evidence of this is found in the Linear B tablets dating from 1500 BC. The alphabet used then was adapted from the Phoenician alphabet and, with various modifications, is still used today. Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus and it is spoken by approximately 15 million people.

Two main forms of the language have been in use since the end of the Medieval Greek period: Dhimotikí the language spoken by the people and Katharévusa, an imitation of classical Greek. Since 1976 the Greek government adopted Dhimotiki (Modern Greek) as the official language.
Greek has influenced the world's scientific and technical vocabulary, and make up a large part of the vocabulary of many languages. Probably you already know more Greek than you realize. Words like democracy, astronomy, anatomy and atmosphere are all Greek.
Greek is an exciting, different language and historically one of our most important and oldest one! With Anixi you will not only learn Greek, but also feel Greece. Both as the modern country it is today and through its ancient culture.
